🏚️ Grain Storage Calculator — Silo & Bunker Capacity

Calculate silo and bunker storage capacity in tonnes. Plan harvest logistics and grain inventory management.

Quick answer: Round silo: π × r² × height × bulk density. 6m dia × 10m high = 280 m³ × 0.75 t/m³ = 210 tonnes wheat. Bunker: length × width × height × bulk density.

📐 How Storage Capacity Is Calculated

Round silo: Volume = π × r² × height. Tonnes = Volume × Bulk density.
Square: Volume = length × width × height. Tonnes = Volume × Bulk density.
Bunker: Volume = length × width × height × 0.8 (for conical ends).
  1. Measure dimensions — diameter/width, height, length
  2. Calculate volume — in cubic metres
  3. Apply bulk density — specific to grain type
  4. Convert to tonnes — volume × density

📊 Worked Example

Round silo: 6m diameter, 10m height. Wheat bulk density 0.78 t/m³.

Radius = 3m. Volume = 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6 m³
Tonnes = 282.6 × 0.78 = 220 tonnes wheat

For canola (0.68 t/m³) same silo holds 282.6 × 0.68 = 192 tonnes.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Round silo: π × (Diameter÷2)² × Height × Bulk density. Example: 6m dia × 10m high × 0.78 = 220 tonnes wheat.

6m dia × 10m high = 210 tonnes wheat. 9m dia × 12m high = 570 tonnes wheat. 12m dia × 15m high = 1,275 tonnes wheat.

Wheat: 0.75-0.80 t/m³, Barley: 0.65-0.70, Canola: 0.65-0.70, Oats: 0.50-0.55, Corn: 0.70-0.75.

Total expected tonnes ÷ average silo size. Example: 1,000 tonnes wheat ÷ 200t per silo = 5 silos needed. Add 20% buffer for harvest timing.
