🌾 Seeding Rate Calculator — Kg per Hectare

Calculate the exact seed required per hectare based on your target plant population, seed size, and germination rate. Optimise seeding rates for wheat, barley, canola, and other crops.

Quick answer: Seeding rate (kg/ha) = (Target plants/m² × Seed weight (g/1000 seeds)) ÷ (Germination % × Establishment %). Typical wheat: 80-120 kg/ha. Canola: 3-6 kg/ha.

🌾 Calculate Seeding Rate

Wheat: 180-220, Barley: 200-240, Canola: 40-80
Wheat 35-55g, Barley 40-55g, Canola 4-7g
From seed test — typically 85-98%
Good conditions: 85-95%. Poor: 60-75%

Expected Plants/m²

📐 How Seeding Rate Is Calculated

Seeds per m² = Target Plants ÷ (Germination % × Establishment %) × 100
Seeding rate (kg/ha) = (Seeds per m² × Seed weight (g)) ÷ 100
  1. Set target plant population — based on crop type and growing conditions
  2. Account for germination — adjust for seed test results
  3. Account for establishment — field conditions affect emergence
  4. Calculate kg/ha — convert seeds/m² to kg using seed weight

📊 Worked Example

Wheat: Target 200 plants/m², seed weight 45g/1000 seeds, germination 95%, establishment 90%.

Seeds per m² = 200 ÷ (0.95 × 0.90) = 234 seeds/m²
Seeding rate = (234 × 45) ÷ 100 = 105 kg/ha

If germination drops to 85%, rate increases to 200 ÷ (0.85×0.90) = 261 seeds/m² → 117 kg/ha. Always test seed lots.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Seeding rate (kg/ha) = (Target plants/m² × Seed weight) ÷ (Germination % × Establishment %). Example: 200 × 45 ÷ (0.95 × 0.90) = 105 kg/ha.

Wheat: 80-120 kg/ha, Barley: 90-130 kg/ha, Canola: 3-6 kg/ha, Oats: 80-110 kg/ha, Field peas: 120-180 kg/ha.

Lower germination means more seed. If target is 100 kg/ha at 95% germination, at 85% you need 100 × (95÷85) = 112 kg/ha. Always get a germination test.

Target is what you want. Actual is what emerges. Establishment rate (80-95%) accounts for seedbed conditions, moisture, insects and disease.
