📉 Machinery Depreciation Calculator

Calculate annual depreciation, current value and cost per hour for your farm machinery. Understand true ownership costs for tractors, harvesters, seeders and sprayers.

Quick answer: A $300,000 tractor over 12 years: annual depreciation $20,000, cost per hour $33 (600 hours/year). After 5 years, value ~$150,000.

📉 Calculate Machinery Depreciation

New or purchase price including GST (if not claiming)
Tractors 10-15 years, harvesters 10-12 years, sprayers 8-12 years
Typical: tractor 500-800 hrs/year, harvester 300-500 hrs/year
Value after useful life — typically 15-30% of new price
Annual Depreciation
Depreciation per Hour
Salvage Value
Value After 5 Years

📐 How Machinery Depreciation Is Calculated

Annual Depreciation = (Purchase Price − Salvage Value) ÷ Useful Life
Depreciation per Hour = Annual Depreciation ÷ Annual Hours
Salvage Value = Purchase Price × (Salvage % ÷ 100)
  1. Calculate salvage value — estimated value at end of useful life
  2. Calculate total depreciable amount — purchase price minus salvage
  3. Divide by useful life — gives annual straight-line depreciation
  4. Divide by annual hours — gives depreciation cost per operating hour

📊 Worked Example

A new tractor costs $300,000, useful life 12 years, used 600 hours/year, salvage value 20% ($60,000).

Annual Depreciation = ($300,000 − $60,000) ÷ 12 = $20,000/year
Depreciation per Hour = $20,000 ÷ 600 = $33.33/hour
Value after 5 years = $300,000 − ($20,000 × 5) = $200,000

This tractor costs $33/hour in depreciation alone. Add interest, insurance, repairs ($50-80/hour) for true operating cost.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Straight-line: (Purchase Price − Salvage Value) ÷ Useful Life. Most farm machinery has a 10-15 year useful life and 20-30% salvage value.

Tractors: 10-15% per year, harvesters: 12-18% per year. Most value is lost in first 3-5 years. After 10 years, machinery typically retains 20-30% of new price.

Depreciation is a tax-deductible expense. Australian farmers can use instant asset write-off for assets under $20,000 or depreciate larger assets over effective life.

Used (3-5 years old) has much lower depreciation rate — often best value. Compare total cost of ownership including depreciation, repairs, interest and insurance.
